Universal's Deluxe Editions

Comments

Usually "mono" editions are still released because there are people who prefer them for their "wall of sound" quality.

At least, that's how I always understood it. I guess it would be more like buying a CD with a record as an extra than like a DVD with VHS as an extra.

Are the extras from "Chelsea Girl" the tracks that were on the album, or are they different versions?
If you consider remastered different, then those Chelsea Girl are cleaned up/remastered for this release. I'm not sure if this album was re-released on CD, but it sounds perfect here, I've always liked Nico's vocals.
It was actually reissued on vinyl not that long ago. I'd imagine the CD is still available.

It just seems kind of odd to me that they'd just stick something on there that really, aside from the involvement of members of VU on the album, isn't really related to the album itself.
I guess my biggest disappointment was hearing the exact version on the 2nd disc as the 1st disc, only in mono, I felt it didn't add much, at least to me.... maybe it should've been a 12" because that would be a nice bonus.

btw i recently bought the Beatles with bonus DVD (audio) and that was a waste of my money haha :) ... since i don't listen to music on my dvd player...
Yeah. I always kinda got the feeling that DVD-A was the kinda thing for people with ridiculous home theater setups exclusively. I don't know what possessed anyone to market it as a viable format, but I wouldn't call it one.

Not to mention the other things "DVDA" implies.

But actually, they recently reissued the mono editions of all the old Velvet Underground albums on vinyl. Really, as you've already said, there's just not much they can really stick on the bonus discs 'cause it's all been released by now in various reissues and box sets.
Although to be fair, they could stick the version of the recording on the original acetate on there. That's been reissued on vinyl, but I don't know about CD. And it's actually quite listenable. A little cleaning up and remastering and it would sound great.
